Chef (2014) movie review

Road Trip with a Food Truck

Starting from scratch never tasted so good.

When a chef gets into a Twitter flame war with a food critic his whole life changes.

Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) is a chef with a reputation for inventive cooking whose boss (Dustin Hoffman) won't let him experiment with the menu. When noted internet food critic Ramsay Michel (Oliver Platt) calls him on his mundanity, Carl's son put him on Twitter so he can see what's being said. A newbie mistake sees Carl Casper broadcasting his anger, and after an attempt at a do-over ends with Carl losing his job, Carl's anger goes viral on YouTube.

But this story isn't about how anyone can lose their sanity and livelihood when contemporary social networking bleeds into real life. Carl's wife Inez (Sofía Vergara) encourages him to go back to his roots and through the money of her other ex-husband (Robert Downey Jr), he finds himself and his young son and a sidekick bringing a filthy food truck back into commission.

What happens next is the ultimate food truck road trip. With son Percy (Emjay Anthony) tweeting, blogging and video-capturing the three make their way across country eating the local cuisine and serving up cubanos and other regional specialities to long, appreciative queues.

It's food, fun and redemption in a food truck. Funny, human and worth the price of admission.
