The Cat Who ...Hoary old James Macintosh Qwilleran was an investigative reporter before there was a title for the role. But alcoholism took its toll and he has fallen on hard times. His last chance is a paper where his childhood friend is an editor. To his horror he is assigned to the art beat where he meets an eccentric critic who offers Qwill a chance to rent the vacant flat in his building. Qwill discovers that the price he pays for a gourmet neighbour is the expectation that he will do odd jobs, like minding a remarkable Siamese Kao Ko'Kung. The pair team up to become one of the most entertaining crime-busting duos in fiction. In each book, there are two sets of clues for the readers: the clues that Qwill encounters, and the messages that KoKo (as Qwill renames him) is trying to deliver through his behaviour.

In the second volume KoKo gets a female companion, Yum Yum. Initially, the stories follow Qwill as he moves from one assignment to another giving us a look at a variety of esoteric cultures: decorators, junk/collectible sellers, artists, and so on. After a few volumes, Qwill takes up residence in Moose County where the eccentricities of small town life provide a backdrop for most of his adventures. Jackson Braun's style is hyper-real, the characters are strongly drawn, especially the cats whose behaviour is very familiar. She names towns and people and places with a caricature-like nomenclature that suggests a touch of humour and a fondness for the absurd. Search Amazon.co.uk for books by Lillian Jackson Braun
