Stephanie Plum: Burg Bounty HunterStephanie Plum was the lingerie buyer for a discount chain until financial reverses left her hocking her belongings to get by. The repo man is after her car, and she and her faithful hamster Rex are reduced to hamster nuggets. Her parents send her to Cousin Vinnie, a bail bondsman with a taste for young men with nipple rings and pointed breasts and buxom women -- and a duck. Thanks to the duck, and a little blackmail, Stephanie gets herself a week to chase down a killer and earn a $10,000 bounty. The killer is a cop, Morelli, a lean bodied ghost from her past who taught her to play 'trains' as a child, and relieved her of her virginity as a teenager. Years later Stephanie accidentally knocked him down while driving a Buick on the sidewalk.

Of course Stephanie has no training in bounty hunting, her favourite exercises are shopping and eating, which is par for the course in the Burg. A land of the extended family, once practically a retirement village for wise guys, where little old ladies have to swap their .45s for something smaller after their hip replacements. Our heroine is afraid of her gun, and generally keeps it in a cookie jar on her kitchen bench (a la Rockford). Stephanie is the Eliza Doolittle of Bounty Hunters and her Professor Higgins is Ranger (Ricardo Carlos Manoso) a Cuban-American hard body with special training, a secret home, and an endless supply of expensive black cars of doubtful provenance. Like all great super heroes Ranger works on the outskirts of the law, living in secret places and using really cool expensive toys from inexplicable places. The Stephanie Plum series is comedy, a closely observed vignette of an idiosyncratic community, full of guns, knives, exploding funeral homes, bodies that fly off car roof racks, and more. Stephanie Rules, buy volume one for your friends and share the addiction. A Festivale recommendation.
