Historic Carlton Gardens was the site of Australia's first national parliament at the Royal Exhibition Building. The gardens feature lawns, water features and fine old trees, as well as the Melbourne Museum complex.

Close to the famous street, Lygon Street, Little Italy, one of the great food streets of Melbourne on one side, and the gentrified Fitzroy and Brunswick Street on the other. Both are casual dining and coffee stop locations.
