Laken Cane

American Laken Cane is an urban fantasy writer.

Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?

The fans are SO important to me. I have the readers in mind during my workday, talk with them on Facebook, and just really enjoy my interactions with them. I feel them with me with every book I write.

I recently held a contest, then selected four winners. Two fans would get their names into book 6 of the Rune Alexander series, and the other two fans would get to create names for characters in book 6. These characters might meet a horrible end, but the fans are okay with that. I hope. ;)

Is there any particular incident (a letter, a meeting, a comment that stands out?

So many. Fans who tell me my books helped them through a difficult time, or lifted them out of their own misery, or just touched them in some way. Fans who write to tell me they never imagined they'd ever like the kinds of books I write but are now addicted. I can't explain how great that makes me feel.

Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?

It's so difficult for me to choose favorites, as you can probably tell from my previous answers! But if I have to choose one author, it has to be Stephen King. I started reading him when I was a child, and have been reading him ever since. If I'm in a reading slump, I turn to him. I can lose myself in his worlds in a way I can't with many other writers. He's always been one of my best reading escapes and I don't see that changing.

Who is the person you would most like to be trapped in a lift with? or a spaceship?

Hmmm. The elevator -- Dwayne Johnson. Not only could he probably get us out of there, but I'd have a really good time watching him try. The spaceship -- Stephen King. He could take my mind off the fact that I'm trapped in a spaceship by telling me stories. :)

Who is the person you would most DISlike to be trapped in a lift with? Or a spaceship?

Not a who but a what. Spiders. There are few things more terrifying to me! I don't even like to type the word.

What would you pack for space? (Is there a food, beverage, book, teddy bear, etc that you couldn't do without?)

My Kindle and my coffee. I can't go without caffeine for long. Shudder. I'll be right back. I need to get a cup of coffee.

What is the most important thing you would like to get/achieve from your work?

For it to matter. To leave something behind when I'm gone

What is the special satisfaction of your work?

The fact that I can make a living doing something so incredibly...incredible. That I can live vicariously through the characters I create :)
