There is nothing more human than the will to survive

A young programmer wins the chance to meet his brilliant and reclusive boss, and stay at his beautiful home /laboratory in the woods.

Meeting the boss when he's a genius with technology is an exciting opportunity for young Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson), but he discovers that Nathan's beautiful home is also his laboratory. Caleb is brought to meet Ava (Alicia Vikander), an android with artificial intelligence, perhaps.

Caleb is to administer a Turing Test, to determine whether she is fully intelligent or not. To do this he must interact with her through a glass wall.

Meanwhile he and his boss socialise, served by the silent Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno) who speaks no English (for security reasons).

It's a strange dynamic, four people in a minimalist environment in the middle of nature.

Is Ava a person? Is she a functioning, intelligent, self-aware, (artificial) life form? What will happen to her if she passes the test? What will happen if she fails?
