Hilary & Jackie movie review

Hilary & Jackie

It's based on a true story (again).

Little Hilary and Jackie Du Pre were just a couple of musical girls in a musical family. Mum was a conductor who wrote and illustrated songs for the girls as well as teaching them 'movement'. Dad played the accordion.

The two girls become women with unequal careers, and we see their lives from both points of view.

In the press kit we are told that watching someone play an instrument is 'boring', so the scenes of performances are filled with gratuitous camera swirls that detract from the music, and the story.

If film makers find aspects of their stories too dull, they should ask: is the subject matter not a good story, or are they without the necessary insights to tell it?

Whatever is done well in this film is counterbalanced by weaknesses.

Ultimately the questions are: is this a universal enough story to be of value? is it presented (and paced) appropriately?

For this reviewer, it was an unsatisfying experience.
