The Avengers movie review
The Avengers

Steed (Finnes) and Mrs Peel (Thurman) are called in to investigate the peculiar weather conditions -- freak snowstorms, hail of Old Testament proportions, temperatures wildly fluctuating. Could they be the result of machinations by Sir August De Wynter (Connery).

I took the precaution of viewing a couple of old Avengers tapes before heading off to the cinema to see this.

The film has the same rhythm of the series, a very stylised dead pan delivery, which didn't always work then, and probably will have trouble finding an audience now.

Movie Poster, The Avengers, Festivale film review; avengers.jpg - 16632 Bytes It is a sort of wanna-be camp in the same ilk as the TV Batman series. In the nineties, we demand that the sophistication extend to the plots. As a femme, I ground my teeth thoroughly when they took Doctor Peel and demoted her to Mrs Peel, making her an emotional wreck without her man. A little less attention to style and attitude and more attention to script and real characterisation would have improved this film.
